Artist-in-Residence Grant Program

The EIAF Artist-in-Residence Grant Program, administered by the Edeiken International Arts Foundation (EIAF), enters its second year with a renewed commitment to fostering artistic innovation and cultural exchange through sound-based disciplines. Founded by Dr. Nicole Edeiken, the Foundation has established this residency opportunity at 7artscafe in Yokohama, Japan, inviting international musicians, composers, sound artists, and interdisciplinary practitioners to engage deeply with the local community while developing new work. The program's central mission is to support creative experimentation and public engagement through a curated, immersive one-month residency. Designed for mid-career professionals, the residency emphasizes originality, public participation, and community integration. Eligible applicants must demonstrate at least five years of professional activity, with tangible work in the past two years, and must reside outside of Japan. Musicians aged 25 or older may apply individually or as part of an ensemble (up to four members) under a unified application. A key aim of the program is to foster mutual exchange, encouraging projects that resonate with the cultural textures and sonic environments of Yokohama. Awarded artists or ensembles receive a grant of $10,000 USD to cover travel, housing, project materials, and other residency-related costs. This amount is disbursed in four installments. The grant does not provide for large instrument transport or visa support, and participants are expected to use personal equipment and software. Recipients are required to remain in Yokohama for the full one-month duration and must host a minimum of four free public events, such as performances, workshops, or open rehearsals. A final concert or sound installation at 7artscafe concludes the residency period. The application process demands a comprehensive set of materials, including a completed form and CV (maximum three pages), official photo identification, 3–5 high-quality recordings from recent projects, a project proposal (up to 1,000 words), two professional references, and a two-minute video statement outlining the applicant's motivations. The proposed project must include a clear public component and demonstrate cultural sensitivity, artistic rigor, and feasibility within a one-month timeframe. A selection panel comprising Dr. Edeiken, Dr. Joseph Amato, and additional music and culture professionals will review submissions based on artistic merit, community impact, project feasibility, and cross-cultural relevance. The program is highly competitive, and incomplete or noncompliant submissions are automatically disqualified. Finalists are not notified unless selected. Applications are submitted via an online form by March 1, 2026, at 17:00 JST. The recipient will be announced on March 15, 2026, through email and public channels. No feedback is provided for non-selected applicants. This recurring program provides a platform for international sound-based artists to create transformative work within the vibrant cultural context of Yokohama.
