Artist Opportunities

The Artist Opportunities grant, administered by the Ohio Arts Council (OAC), is designed to support individual Ohio-based artists at various stages of their careers who are pursuing professional development or community-enhancing artistic projects. Open to artists across all disciplines, the grant provides financial assistance to facilitate opportunities that foster artistic growth or contribute to the cultural vitality of Ohio communities. This support aims to help artists reach new audiences, develop new skills, or invest in tools and resources that advance their creative careers. Funding is available in two tiers: up to $500 for emerging artists and up to $2,500 for professional artists. The grant requires no cash match, and successful applicants can generally expect to receive their full requested amount. For this program, emerging artists are those who have consistently worked in their chosen field for over three years and demonstrate strong artistic potential, while professional artists are defined as those who dedicate a significant portion of their time to creating, performing, or teaching their art and receive some form of financial compensation for their work. Eligible uses of the grant include participation in artist residencies, workshops, or fellowships; expenses related to exhibitions, performances, or publications; and production of marketing materials, equipment purchases (capped at $1,500), and rental fees for facilities or services. However, grants may not be used for duplication of previous work, travel to out-of-state events, daily operational costs of an arts-related business, or to support students currently pursuing academic degrees. Additionally, recipients of the Individual Excellence Award are ineligible for Artist Opportunities funding for five years following their award year. Applications must be submitted through ARTIE, the OAC's online grant management system, and must include work samples and professional documentation such as resumes or biographies. Narrative responses should provide a clear and detailed explanation of how the project aligns with the artist's career goals. Evaluation is conducted by a panel of professionals and community members, who score applications across four categories: Program Quality, Community Engagement, Defining and Measuring Success, and Resource Management. Each application can receive up to 60 points in total. The application cycle opens in November each year and closes on May 1 at 5 p.m. ET, covering eligible activities occurring from November 1 through June 30 of the following year. Award announcements are made in October. Upon acceptance, grantees receive 50% of the award amount upfront, with the balance paid upon submission and approval of a final report. Failure to submit required documentation can result in the cancellation of the grant and loss of future funding eligibility.
