Grant Description

The Direct Action Visionary Grants are offered by the American Psychological Foundation (APF) to support innovative, community-centered interventions grounded in psychological science. These grants are designed to meet urgent needs in communities through direct action projects that leverage evidence-based psychological approaches. Recognizing the importance of both advancing psychological research and addressing community well-being, APF aims to fund projects that enact tangible change and serve vulnerable populations in meaningful ways. The program places a strong emphasis on supporting communities experiencing various forms of bigotry, including racism, antisemitism, homophobia, and misogyny. Applicants are encouraged to align their proposed interventions with at least one of APF’s four Visionary Priorities: serving marginalized communities, ending prejudice and stigma, preventing violence, and exploring mind-body health connections. Projects may take diverse forms, but all must be grounded in psychological knowledge and demonstrate the potential to deliver measurable community impact. Eligible applicants include individuals and organizations, and they are not required to be psychologists or mental health professionals. However, a key requirement is the central involvement of an expert in the relevant psychological intervention or resource throughout the project’s implementation. Proposals must detail a strong evidence base and demonstrate the applicant’s capacity to execute the work effectively in real-world settings such as community mental health centers or outreach initiatives. The fund specifically excludes projects focused on facility renovations, proof-of-concept studies, clinical trials for new interventions, or pilot studies that lack real-world implementation. The application process begins with the submission of a Letter of Intent (LOI), which can be submitted on a rolling basis. These LOIs are reviewed quarterly, with specific deadlines occurring on October 31, January 30, April 30, July 31, and again October 30, 2026. Based on the LOIs, selected applicants will be invited to submit full proposals. Full applications can be submitted at any time after invitation but will be reviewed only following the biannual deadlines of March 31 and September 8. LOIs must clearly articulate the project’s alignment with APF priorities, its goals and methods, commitment level, and a detailed evaluation plan for monitoring outcomes. Each LOI is assessed on its potential innovation and impact, clarity and viability of methodology, and the critical need for funding. APF does not provide pre-submission feedback or evaluations on project ideas. Applicants are encouraged to use the GivingData portal to review comprehensive application instructions and FAQs. Any additional questions may be directed to the APF Programs team via email at [email protected]. Awards may total up to $60,000 per project. The fund supports projects across the United States, and there is no geographic restriction stated, implying national eligibility. Recent recipients include Amy Hyoeun Lee, PhD, whose work focused on community-partnered trauma care interventions. This reflects the foundation’s ongoing support of creative, real-world applications of psychological knowledge in the service of social justice and community wellness.
