Grant Description

Grants for Arts Projects (GAP) is the primary grant program offered by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), a federal agency committed to supporting excellence in the arts for the benefit of all Americans. Through GAP, the NEA enables people across the United States to access diverse artistic experiences, contribute to the nation’s cultural heritage, and engage in lifelong arts education. The program also supports arts-based health initiatives, including creative arts therapies, that foster community and individual well-being. GAP welcomes applications from a wide range of organizations, including those serving rural, urban, suburban, and tribal communities, and is inclusive of entities with varying operating budgets and grant experience. GAP funding is available in a broad array of artistic disciplines such as Arts Education, Dance, Design & Our Town, Folk & Traditional Arts, Literary Arts, Local Arts Agencies, Museums, Music, Opera, Presenting & Multidisciplinary Works, Theater & Musical Theater, and Visual & Media Arts. The grant offers funding opportunities for projects that align with NEA priorities, including cultural preservation, community engagement, and the expansion of access to the arts. Applicants are encouraged to align their projects with these strategic objectives to enhance the competitiveness of their proposals. Projects should provide public engagement with artistic excellence and offer meaningful arts experiences. The grant program operates on a biannual cycle with two primary deadlines: one in February and one in July. For the FY27 cycle, the Part 1 application is due by February 12, 2026, followed by the Part 2 submission through the NEA Applicant Portal by February 25, 2026. Affected applicants experiencing issues such as technical upload failures or weather-related disruptions may request deadline extensions under specific conditions. Extensions, if granted, allow resubmission until March 5, 2026. The July cycle follows a similar structure with a Part 1 deadline of July 9, 2026, and a Part 2 deadline of July 21, 2026. Application notifications will be issued in November 2026 for the February cycle and in April 2027 for the July cycle. Applicants must register with Login.gov, the System for Award Management (SAM.gov), and Grants.gov prior to applying. Part 1 of the application requires submission of the Application for Federal Domestic Assistance via Grants.gov. Part 2 involves completing the Grant Application Form (GAF) on the NEA Applicant Portal. Additional documentation such as project narratives, work samples, and financial details may be required, depending on the project type. Application resources, including checklists and templates, are available on the NEA website to aid in preparation. Eligible applicants include nonprofit organizations with 501(c)(3) status, units of state or local government, and federally recognized tribal communities or tribes. Applicants must have at least five years of prior arts programming and a minimum operating budget of $20,000 in the previous fiscal year. Only one application per organization is allowed annually, with exceptions for designated Local Arts Agencies applying on behalf of subgrantees. Projects led by individuals, for-profit enterprises, fiscal sponsors, or State Arts Agencies and Regional Arts Organizations are not eligible under this grant. Funding requests vary based on the project type. Most applicants may request between $10,000 and $100,000, while Local Arts Agencies conducting subgranting projects may request up to $150,000. Challenge America applicants are limited to exactly $10,000. All grants require a 1:1 cost share that may include cash and in-kind contributions. Awards are contingent on NEA approval following notification of recommendation. Additional documentation may be required post-notification to finalize awards. Funded projects may begin as early as January 1, 2027 (February cycle) or June 1, 2027 (July cycle).
