Grant Description

The Inspiration Grants program, administered by ArtsKC, is designed to support individual artists and small groups of artists undertaking ambitious creative projects that represent risk, growth, and transformation in their practice or produce a positive community impact. This initiative invites proposals across a wide range of disciplines including visual arts, dance, music, theater, literature, poetry, fashion, film, and interdisciplinary work. As a regional arts council, ArtsKC champions the vitality of Kansas City’s cultural sector and supports professional artists through direct funding and resources to nurture both career and community development. ArtsKC has a longstanding commitment to bolstering the local arts ecosystem. In Spring 2025 alone, the program awarded ten grants totaling $36,500, with 26% of applicants receiving funding. Inspiration Grants are offered biannually—in spring and fall—allowing artists multiple windows of opportunity to seek support. For the 2025–2026 Round II cycle, applications open on January 14, 2026, with a submission deadline of March 12, 2026. Funded activities for this round must take place between March 13, 2026, and September 30, 2026. Grant decisions are expected by late April 2026, and final impact reports are due by the end of September 2026. Fall rounds typically open in June with deadlines in September and project windows running from September through March. Eligible applicants must be individual adult artists (18+) residing in the Kansas City metropolitan area, specifically the counties of Jackson, Clay, and Platte in Missouri and Johnson and Wyandotte in Kansas. Applicants from adjacent counties may also be considered if their proposed project occurs within ArtsKC’s service area. Organizations are not eligible, nor are applicants permitted to apply to consecutive rounds—they must wait out one cycle between submissions. A prior grantee may reapply only after fulfilling reporting obligations and sitting out the required round. Applications must be submitted through the ArtsKC Grant System. New applicants are instructed to create an account and follow the online prompts, while returning users should log in to access and submit their applications. Applicants are encouraged to submit draft applications for feedback at least 30 days prior to the deadline. Draft reviews do not require complete documentation and can be submitted directly through the online portal. Project budgets must be balanced, with in-kind resources and the requested grant amount included, and ArtsKC recommends reserving 20% of the awarded funds to account for potential tax liability. Each application is reviewed by a rotating committee composed of diverse community members with relevant artistic and civic experience. Proposals are evaluated based on artistic achievement, impact on the artist’s career and the community, and project feasibility and budget soundness. Questions may be sent to applicants during the review process, though not all will receive follow-ups. Final funding decisions are made by the ArtsKC Board of Directors based on the committee’s recommendations. The standard Inspiration Grant amount is $3,500. However, ArtsKC also offers the Paul Tyler Inspiration Award—named in honor of Paul Tyler, a longtime Grants Director and arts advocate—which provides a $5,000 grant to one artist or artist group per round. This award recognizes projects that demonstrate exceptional transformative potential and risk-taking. Applicants interested in being considered must propose a project with a minimum total budget of $5,000. All grantees are required to submit an impact report detailing outcomes and lessons learned by the end of their project period.
