Grant Description

The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) has launched a research funding opportunity titled "Study of PFAS in Michigan Agricultural Systems." This grant program reflects MDARD’s mission to protect public health, support agricultural producers, and stimulate Michigan's agricultural economy. In collaboration with the Michigan PFAS Action Response Team (MPART)—a multi-agency initiative addressing PFAS contamination across the state—MDARD seeks to deepen scientific understanding and develop mitigation strategies for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) found in Michigan's agricultural environment. This grant program is the first research-specific funding call from MDARD focused on PFAS and agriculture. It invites proposals for projects lasting one to four years, addressing topics such as PFAS dynamics in soil and water systems, uptake in crops and livestock, and contamination management techniques. The state has committed up to $1.6 million in total, with awards ranging from $50,000 to $400,000 per project. Proposed studies must align with state-specific needs and clearly articulate their relevance to Michigan's agricultural systems. Field research conducted outside the state must include a strong rationale for its relevance to Michigan agriculture. Eligible applicants include qualified researchers affiliated with Michigan-based institutions of higher education, including community and Tribal colleges. Teams may also include individuals from nonprofit organizations, consulting firms, and Tribal entities. Each project must designate at least one principal investigator from a Michigan institution. Applicants may submit a maximum of two proposals in which they are listed as a PI or co-PI. The grant application process consists of a two-stage submission. Applicants must first submit a one-page Letter of Intent by April 20, 2026, describing the project title, research partners, selected priority area(s), and a brief project summary. Only invited applicants may proceed to submit a full proposal, which must be submitted by June 1, 2026. All communications and document submissions should be sent via email to [email protected]. Proposals will be evaluated based on their contribution to Michigan agriculture, scientific merit, literature support, broader impacts, qualifications of the investigators, and overall cost justification. Notifications of funding decisions will be made by July 13, 2026, with funding scheduled to begin on September 1, 2026. Allowable indirect costs are capped at 10% of modified total direct costs. Key research priorities include soil and water PFAS dynamics, PFAS uptake in crops and animals, and management strategies to mitigate contamination. Proposals must also address outreach and dissemination plans for both technical and non-technical audiences, ensuring that findings are accessible to stakeholders across the agricultural sector. Contact information for general inquiries is available through [email protected] or by phone at 800-292-3939. Questions regarding the RFP can be submitted until May 18, 2026.
