Grant Description

The Faculty Early Career Development Program (CAREER), led by the National Science Foundation (NSF), represents one of the agency's most prestigious funding opportunities for early-career faculty. This foundation-wide initiative is designed to support junior faculty who demonstrate the potential to become role models in research and education. The program aims to help faculty members build a strong foundation for a lifetime of integrated contributions in both education and research, aligning with NSF's mission to promote scientific progress and educational excellence. Established across all NSF directorates, the CAREER program emphasizes the integration of research and education in a manner that promotes mutual enrichment and broad dissemination of scientific advancements. The expectation is that CAREER proposals will offer creative, effective plans that integrate the applicant's disciplinary interests with their institutional and professional development goals. Proposals should outline both robust research objectives and meaningful educational activities, demonstrating how these components are synergistically linked to promote discovery and learning. Applicants must be tenure-track (or tenure-track-equivalent) faculty members who hold at least a 50% appointment at eligible institutions and who have not previously received a CAREER award. Eligible organizations include accredited U.S. institutions of higher education and select non-profit, non-academic research organizations. The program particularly encourages submissions from women, underrepresented minorities, and individuals with disabilities. Proposers are limited to one CAREER proposal per cycle and may not participate in more than three CAREER competitions throughout their career. The anticipated funding amount is approximately $250 million annually, with an estimated 500 new CAREER awards made each year. Award amounts are expected to be at least $400,000 over five years, with a higher minimum of $500,000 for proposals submitted to the Biological Sciences, Engineering, or Polar Programs directorates. Proposals must adhere to the NSF Proposal & Award Policies & Procedures Guide (PAPPG), and full proposals must be submitted through Research.gov or Grants.gov. No letters of intent or preliminary proposals are required. The program does not allow for co-principal investigators, and cost sharing is strictly prohibited. Proposals are due annually on the fourth Wednesday of July by 5 p.m. local time. For the 2026 cycle, this corresponds to July 22, 2026. Applications must include a departmental letter that affirms the PI's eligibility and institutional support, and may include letters of collaboration if relevant. Proposals will be reviewed under NSF’s standard merit review criteria, evaluating both intellectual merit and broader impacts. Award notifications generally occur within six months of the submission deadline, with project start dates varying based on individual directorate schedules. In addition to the CAREER awards, NSF also nominates select CAREER awardees for the Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), the highest U.S. government honor for early-career scientists and engineers. Up to 26 NSF-nominated PECASE recipients are chosen annually based on their research excellence and community engagement. Nomination is internal and automatic for eligible awardees; individuals cannot apply directly for the PECASE. NSF also emphasizes activities such as cross-disciplinary partnerships, entrepreneurship, and international engagement, encouraging PIs to integrate these dimensions into their proposals when appropriate.
