The Next Challenge for Media & Journalism
This competition provides funding to innovative media startups in the U.S. that are transforming journalism through technology and new business models, with a focus on strengthening local news and promoting diversity among founders.
The Next Challenge for Media & Journalism is a national competition designed to support and accelerate innovation in local journalism across the United States. Managed by the Glen Nelson Center at American Public Media Group (APMG), this initiative seeks to uplift early-stage startups—both nonprofit and for-profit—that are reimagining how local communities access, engage with, and benefit from journalism. The Glen Nelson Center has a history of investing in emerging media ventures, having supported over 1,000 startups and hundreds of entrepreneurs through similar incubator and competition programs. The 2026 edition of the Next Challenge marks the latest chapter in a multiyear effort to foster diversity and vision in the media startup ecosystem. For 2026, the Challenge will distribute a total of $250,000 in cash grants. The awards are structured to support winners across three distinct divisions: Local News Innovation, Local News Infrastructure, and Local Creator Journalism. Each division award comes with a grant of up to $50,000. Additionally, a Grand Prize of $25,000 will be awarded to one of the division winners. Two more awards—the Vision Award and the Trust Award—will provide $12,500 each to finalists demonstrating exceptional promise in transparency and boldness. Each of the up to 18 finalists (six per division) will also receive a $3,000 stipend to support travel and time expenses associated with participating in the National Awards Celebration. Eligible applicants must be based in the United States or U.S. Territories. For the Innovation and Infrastructure Divisions, entrants must be legally incorporated nonprofit or for-profit media startups, actively publishing or launched, have generated less than $1 million in gross revenue (including philanthropic support) in the prior year, and incorporated within the past 10 years. For the Creator Journalism Division, applicants must be independent U.S.-based creators who exercise editorial control over their work and are not structurally tied to an institution that governs editorial direction. These creators may apply as individuals or collaborations and must meet similar financial and publishing activity benchmarks. The application process is hosted via the YouNoodle platform and involves four main steps: confirming eligibility, selecting a division, submitting organizational and project details, and providing contact information. All entries must be submitted in English by March 10, 2026 at 11:59 PM PT. The competition does not require pre-application submissions such as letters of intent. Up to six finalists will be chosen per division and announced around mid-April 2026. Finalists are expected to submit additional materials by May 7, 2026. Winners will be selected based on innovation, division fit, audience impact, business model, and team experience. Finalist submissions will include a video and pitch deck to be evaluated by independent judges. Division award winners and the Grand Prize recipient(s) will be announced during the National Awards Celebration, scheduled for May 28, 2026. The cash awards will be disbursed within 60 days of that announcement, contingent upon execution of grant agreements and submission of required tax documentation. All winners will also be required to participate in periodic follow-up surveys to evaluate the long-term impact of the awards. Use of award funds must align with federal guidelines applicable to publicly supported charities and grant-funded projects, meaning lobbying, campaign activity, and voter registration drives are prohibited. Awardees may be subject to additional due diligence and must maintain compliance with all rules outlined in the official competition guidelines throughout the process.
