ArtStart Grant

ArtStart Grants 2026–27, administered by Newark Arts, support Newark-based artists and organizations engaged in creative work that contributes to community wellness. Established in 1981, Newark Arts has long championed the role of arts in civic life, aiming to transform lives and communities through artistic engagement. ArtStart is a core part of that mission and represents Newark Arts’ commitment to community-centered creativity. The 2026–27 cycle emphasizes the intersection of arts and wellness, focusing on how artistic practice can foster mental health, healing, and community care. This year’s priority is on projects that utilize creative expression to advance mental, emotional, or spiritual wellness. Eligible initiatives may involve storytelling, intergenerational collaboration, somatic practices, or grief and trauma processing through art. Newark Arts is particularly interested in projects that cultivate connection, address isolation, and promote joy through public art or creative activations. Proposed work may span visual, literary, or performance disciplines and must demonstrate an intentional connection to wellness outcomes. ArtStart provides grants of up to $5,000 to artists, collectives, nonprofits, schools, and community groups based in Newark. While all Newark-based applicants are encouraged to apply, special consideration will be given to those whose projects serve youth, elders, or underserved communities. The programming period for funded projects spans from August 1, 2026 to March 30, 2027. All work must take place within this window. The application process opens on April 1, 2026, with a submission deadline of May 1, 2026. First-time applicants are required to attend a virtual orientation workshop—ArtStart 101—scheduled for April 2, 2026, at 6:00 PM Eastern Time. This workshop is designed to prepare applicants for successful submission and includes an overview of eligibility, project criteria, and the review process. Projects will be evaluated based on their alignment with the arts and wellness theme, clarity of objectives, feasibility, and the potential impact on Newark communities. Newark Arts encourages applications from a wide range of creative practitioners and emphasizes inclusivity across project types and applicant backgrounds.
