Let Creativity Happen Grant
This funding program provides financial support for innovative arts and cultural projects that engage the Houston community and take place within the city limits.
The Let Creativity Happen grant, administered by Houston Arts Alliance (HAA), is a funding opportunity dedicated to supporting innovative artistic projects within the City of Houston. This program is part of HAA’s broader commitment to implementing the City of Houston’s arts vision, and is funded through the Hotel Occupancy Tax (HOT). The grant provides financial support of up to $2,500 per project and is intended to assist artists, creative individuals, and organizations in realizing bold, unconventional ideas that may not align with more traditional grant criteria. By encouraging creative risk-taking, the program aims to inspire fresh perspectives on the arts and create new avenues for public engagement. HAA’s Let Creativity Happen initiative prioritizes projects that challenge artistic norms, redefine the audience’s experience of art, and offer distinctive opportunities to engage with the arts community in Houston. Proposals may be submitted by individual artists, creative professionals, arts organizations, or fiscally sponsored projects, provided they maintain a physical presence within the Houston city limits. All funded activities must occur within Houston proper and must include a public-facing component such as exhibitions, performances, or community events. The grant supports project-related expenses such as artist fees and marketing but excludes expenditures like travel outside the city, professional development, or the purchase of high-value equipment. The grant operates on a recurring schedule with three annual rounds. In 2026, Round 1 opens on March 23 and closes on April 21; funded activities must occur between August 1, 2026 and August 31, 2027. Round 2 accepts applications from May 25 through June 23 for projects running from October 1, 2026 to October 31, 2027. Round 3 opens on August 28 and closes on September 26, supporting work from January 1 to December 31, 2027. All applications must be submitted through the HAA Online Grants Portal and are final once submitted—no revisions are permitted after the deadline. Late or incomplete applications are not accepted under any circumstances. Applicants are evaluated through a competitive peer-review process that considers artistic vibrancy, public impact, feasibility, and alignment with the program’s goals. The evaluation criteria include the project’s artistic goals and clarity, its relevance and engagement with the defined community, promotion and access strategies, and the applicant’s budget and readiness to execute the project. Each applicant must also provide work samples that reflect their ability to successfully complete the proposed work. All applicants must reside or be headquartered in Houston and demonstrate this via official documentation such as utility bills or lease agreements. For fiscally sponsored projects, both the sponsor and the sponsored entity must meet residency requirements. Additionally, grant recipients must host at least one live or virtual public event within the city during the grant term. Required documents include proof of age or incorporation, work samples, and, if applicable, a fiscal sponsorship agreement. Assistance is available throughout the process via workshops, phone, or email. Spanish-language and disability assistance is also available upon request. All official communications regarding applications, award decisions, and follow-up requirements are conducted via email. Final reports are required within 30 days of the grant term’s end. Public acknowledgment of the City of Houston and HAA is also a mandatory part of funded programming.
